The Importance of Brake Pads

To understand what brake pads do, let us first look at the entire brake system. When you put your foot on the brake pedal, the pressure on the brake fluid in the brake line increases. This causes the calipers to clamp down on your rotors. This process creates massive amounts of friction which can become dangerous.

Enter the brake pads. These specifically designed pads reduce the friction of the calipers on the rotors and simultaneously create an environment in which the pads become "sticky." This process allows your rotors, and therefore your tires, to safely slow down.

Without properly maintained brake pads, you risk serious damage to your car. The friction and heat caused from faulty or worn down pads can warp your rotors. This potentially leads to a wide range of catastrophic damage to your wheels, drive train, and even the engine. More importantly, worn out pads create unsafe driving conditions.
