2016 Hyundai Elantra GT at Thompson Hyundai for Baltimore, MD

Hyundai's Elantra SE and Limited sedans for 2016 both get a 145 hp 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine, while Elantra Sport and Elantra GT employ a 173 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder. We think the better bet is the 2.0 liter engine. It offers significantly better power, at the expense of only a moderate hit to fuel economy. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual standard on the SE, Sport and GT hatchback. A 6-speed automatic is available for the sedan and GT, and standard on the Limited. The automatic comes with an Eco mode to further enhance fuel economy, and a manual-shifting mode for a bit of added sport.

Under the Elantra GT's Hood

The Elantra GT's powertrain is unchanged; it still uses a 173-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that teams with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. EPA-estimated gas mileage is 24/33/27 mpg city/highway/combined. Hyundai says the Elantra GT's Driver Selectable Steering Mode has been tuned for better steering feel. The system has Comfort, Normal and Sport modes that offer varying levels of power assistance, on-center feel and steering build-up when cornering. The available Style Package includes sport-oriented suspension tuning.

Design of Hyundai Elantra GT

For 2016, Hyundai gave the Elantra a pretty hefty nose job, eliminating the dual-element grille with the crossbar and installing a unit that uses horizontal slats from top to bottom. Additionally, the grille gets a angular outline, replacing last year's rounded edges. This gives the Elantra GT a more mature and refined look, something the brand has been spreading across its entire lineup. That grille works very well with the rest of the Elantra's body, which carries over unchanged otherwise. The only other change of note is the set of 17" wheels in what Hyundai calls a "euroflange" design. On a whole, the Elantra GT remains as sporty and stylish as it was last year, thanks to its sharp body lines, chrome beltline, and optional LED taillights. It's just a little more refined than it was before.
